This course examines various issues in contemporary life in Japan by focusing on its popular culture in anthropological perspectives.??We will focus on how the Japanese formulate their identity in relationship to the global forces for Westernization, urbanization, modernization and industrialization.??The questions to be explored throughout this course are the following: how the Japanese have incorporated Western goods and ideas in the everyday life style; how they express their own identity in the global and local contexts; and what meanings and perceptions are interwoven with their identity formations.

評価方法: Class discussions, Participations, Presentations, A short term-paper, A take-home examination.
