This course aims to introduce students’ basic sociolinguistic features of the Japanese language, which is necessary for successful communication with native speakers of Japanese. Lining up with Japanese cultural studies subjects and Japanese language subjects, this course provides a third dimension for the understanding of Japanese communication. In this semester the focus will be placed on various types of language varieties used in the contemporary Japanese society. Topics will include male Japanese, female Japanese, youngsters’ Japanese, Japanese dialects, Japanese foreigner talk, Japanese baby talk and honorifics. In addition, the use of onomatopoeia, loanwords, kinship terms and proper names in the Japanese society will also be discussed.
