The course has a dual purpose: examination of the nation-building of Modern Japan in the nineteenth century and the exploration to help the students understand the Japanese experience in the Contemporary East Asian Community. There will be a separate course for each semester as Contemporary Japanese History (A) and (B). We will focus how modern transformation of Japan had a profound effect on the development of nationalist consciousness among the peoples of neighboring countries and posed a threat to their national sovereignty. In spite of intermittent collisions and collusions among imperialist powers in China and Korean peninsula, Japan has played a unique and important role in East Asian affairs from the end of the 19th century. This course mainly emphasizes the background to the current political landscape and the cross-cultural interaction of the region.

評価方法: Fortnightly response journals on course readings, Class discussions and Final paper.

テキスト名: There will be weekly reeding assignments from the selected writings on contemporary Japan.

注意事項: Every student is expected to participate in class discussion.
