When translators or interpreters translate between languages, they need to make various kinds of decisions. For example, they have to decide what to do with culturally specific terms, differences in levels of politeness, and slang. Translation theory gives us some principles to apply to translation situations. In this class we will use a variety of materials to consider issues such as what is a "good" translation, how much a translator can add to a text, what features are typical of translations, and whether translations tend to be longer (or shorter) than the originals.
