CAUTION: The following course contents were the one for the year 2008. Overall course framework will be the same in this year. However the contents, especially debate topics, may be changed. The details will be announced in the first class session of the semester. Goals 1. To develop oral proficiency in English to carry out argumentation. 2. To develop critical thinking skills and attitude toward society. 3. To develop the skill to make public speaking in front of audience and the will to communicate positively. Roles of debate activity are various; it is utilized in various social settings that require resolution of problems (e.g. legal courts, the National Diet). Debate is held for political campaign or consciousness raising (Presidential debate, public debate or symposium on various social problems held by universities or local governments). Debate has been considered as an education tool to improve communications skills in general. Debate also raises human beings to be a critical thinker. Throughout this activity, students are exposed to the scene of the world via researching and required to analyze it as objectively as possible. This activity will provide students with a good chance to improve ability to discuss various social topics. I believe that Kanda students/graduates are expected to be able to carry out such an academic discussion. I also expect KUIS students to show their keen interests in topics of international issues. This would be more so especially when you learn debating in English language! For this reason, this class in this year will deal with topics of ‘surrogacy’ and ‘the Japan-US Security Treaty’. Surrogacy is a very controversial topic; it would be a hope for infertile couples whereas it might contain quite profound questions related to life ethics. Some foreign countries prohibit surrogacy. Japan does not ban it while their attitude is inclined to a negative one. Some other foreign countries legalize it. So we will be able to discuss this issue from variety of international points of view. Issues related to the Japan-US Security Treaty are getting hot as we have had two atrocious crime cases committed by American soldiers in Japan recently. The Treaty is also a center of topic when we discuss ‘power balance’ and ‘stability’ of Asian region. This topic, therefore, will provide us with a useful viewpoint to understand international politics related to Japan. Activities 1. Lecture on debate. Minimum amount of lecture of debate theory and practice will be provided for those who do not have any previous experience of debating. 2. Debate practice Students will debate on the following two topics. They will have two chances to debate on each topic; one as the affirmative side and the other as the negative side. Resolved: That Japan should legalize surrogacy. Resolved: That Japan should terminate the Japan-US Security Treaty. |
