Caution: This is a syllabus of this course in 2009 school year.  There may/may not be some changes in this year.  The updated course contents will be announced in the first day of this course.

Goals
1. To develop oral proficiency in English and communication skills in various public speaking settings.
2. To develop skills to research and effectively organize arguments.
3. To develop critical thinking skills and attitude toward society.

Non-native speakers of English must face various problems when they make a speech in English. Two major problems would be, 1) how to pronounce English, 2) how to continue speaking English without a speech script. Non-native speaker of English tend to maintain accents of their native language when they speak in English. Although these accents sometimes hinder communication, it is also very difficult to erase them completely and acquire native-like accent of English language. It would be an ideal if they could speak in English without any written speech text, but in fact, their command of English may not be as mature as that of native tongue. This course provides students with a chance to think about these problems to conceptualize what proper English pronunciation and articulation is and how to‘survive' in an English public speaking setting as a non-native speaker of English. This course also covers basic research methods and organization methods of ideas for those who have not taken any public speaking courses before.
