Ways of Learning AKA EXPLORING LEARNING In this class we will explore many different ways to learn (read about them and DO them) in the first few weeks. We will focus on making learning fun and pleasurable (you will also learn to juggle as a metaphor to compare to language learning). You will be asked to share your favorite ways of learning and teach others (including the teacher) how they might use your strategies. You will then be asked to make a Personal Learning Plan (PLP) in which you decide to study for a certain grade (contracted), using the certain ways of learning inside and outside of class. Technology permitting, we will also be videoing our conversations once a week to analyze them and looking at accessing computer resources to improve our learning. Initial Text: The Passionate Language User, by Tim Murphey Some of the topics we may cover are: multiple intelligences, habits of mind, learning styles and strategy inventories from a variety of researchers, self talk, total physical response (movement), extensive reading, out of class strategies, internet strategies, movies, songs, e-pals, etc. Approximate In Class Time Use: Teacher Lecture Time 25%, Student-interaction time with seriously playful and creative tasks 75%. Approximately 800 words reading a week (a 2-page article), 100 writing. Mid-term and end of term papers about 750 words each. Evaluations: Your attendance and participation (30%) are seen partially through your action log (40%) as well and the quizzes (10%) and papers (10%) and group projects (10%). All of these overlap. You will fill out a self-evaluation at the end of the semester. |
