In this course, students will develop a better understanding and appreciation of Brazilian Literature and culture. This course examines important Brazilian authors from the mid 19th century to present day, with the primary focus on 20th century literature. Students will study the significance of the texts and films in light of literary traditions and Brazilian history and realities. In other words, students will explore the history, culture, and arts of Brazil from a literary perspective through important writers, playwrights, journalists and literary critics’ views.
Students will be challenged to develop their skills of critical thinking and analysis, to participate in class discussions, and to produce well argued and written essays.

評価方法: Attendance; active participation during discussion sessions; preparation; written assignment; final exam.

  Students may find useful to have a book of verbs and a good dictionary with them all times.

注意事項: This is a rewarding yet challenging class. This class demands that you do your best, and nothing less than your best should be forthcoming. Note that this class is mainly taught in Portuguese, therefore students are very much encourage to speak in Portuguese in class, enhancing, this way, their language skills in a flexible and communicative way.

Important note: Students must read, study, and be prepared to present on and discuss the readings/films before coming to class. (There will be periodic unannounced quizzes on the readings/films.)
