Getting the ball rolling, going great guns, sitting on the fence, throwing the baby out with the bathwater, flogging a dead horse, kicking the bucket―for almost every situation imaginable, there is a colourful English idiom. Because their meaning is non-literal, idiomatic expressions pose a particular challenge for learners of English as a foreign language. Learning these formulaic expressions, however, is key to unlocking the English-speaking world, from internet blogs to TV talk shows, to movies and music―and much everyday humour. In this course, we will analyze a variety of authentic, spoken and written texts for idiom use, collect and study idiomatic expressions (tracing them back to their origins whenever possible), and practice using them ourselves in a variety of genres. A good deal of class time will be spent doing group work, and participation from each student is extremely important―please be prepared to pull your own weight. Students will be assigned a reasonable amount of homework, which may include reading, writing and internet research. |
