  Gender & Sexuality in the Media

What makes us male or female? What kinds of roles do men and women have in society? How does the media affect how we see these roles? During this 14-week course, students will;

- explore the core concepts of gender and sexuality in terms of their own understandings
- explore how gender and sexuality relate to each other
- critically explore these concepts from a range of different scientific and theoretical positions
- critically analyse media representations of various gender and sexual identities utilising the above perspectives

1. Introduction - Students will explore what they understand to be the meanings of ‘gender’ and ‘sexuality’ and participate in discussions designed to challenge some of their preconceptions.
2. Gender - Students will study a number of theories on the nature of ‘gender’ through a series of readings and discussions.
3. Gender in the Media - As a class, students will discuss various representations of gender in the media. In groups, they will produce a presentation that analyses a media depiction of ‘gender’.
4. Sexuality - Students will study a number of theories on the nature of ‘sexuality’ through a series of readings and discussions.
5. Sexuality in the Media - As a class, students will discuss various representations of gender in the media. In groups, they will produce a presentation that analyses a media depiction of ‘sexuality’.
6. Final Project - Individually, students will deconstruct the representation of gender and/or sexuality in a film of their choice and produce a 1500+ word essay.
