This is a multidisciplinary course introducing students to contemporary social issues in New Zealand using a variety of visual and written texts.
We begin by exploring New Zealand's colonial origins and development, before examining the role of ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality in producing social inequalities and social identities, and we finish by considering New Zealand's claim to be a 'green' country.
There will be a particular emphasis on the role Maori have had in shaping contemporary New Zealand.
This course is for the student interested in New Zealand and in Maori culture. No prior engagement with sociology or knowledge of New Zealand is assumed.
