The purpose of this course is to help students develop a greater understanding of the intricate relations between language and culture. Students will read about and discuss a variety of topics in applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, including dialects, first and second language acquisition, and nonverbal communication. Special attention will be paid to the ways in which children and other newcomers to a speech community learn language and culture to become a member of the community. Moreover, the course will help students develop their four language skills in English. In other words, students will learn to use English as they learn about language and culture.
