Aims and Objectives The overall aims of this course are: ・To learn about how English has become an international language. ・To learn about the history of English, how it has spread throughout the world and how it is used by speakers in different parts of the globe. Students will also find out why their classmates are studying English and how they plan to use English in the future. ・To introduce different attitudes towards the spreads of English and how it is taught, including attitudes towards Japanese English and the English education system in Japan. ・To equip students with the required skills to communicate in international environments using English. The course will have a communicative focus and will increase familiarity with different kinds of English they may encounter in their daily lives. Learning Outcomes Knowledge and Understanding On completion of the course, students should be able to: ・Demonstrate extensive knowledge of the history of the English language and different varieties of English around the world, along with a range of possible explanations for particular linguistic developments. ・Have a deeper understanding of the various ways in which English is now used and skills often used by English speakers in international contexts. Skills and Other Attributes ・The course is also designed to improve critical thinking skills by engagement in heated discussions in class about selected topics. Students will be encouraged to participate in these discussions actively and will learn a variety of discussion skills. ・By undertaking two presentations, participants will develop their presentation skills and through weekly ・Through completing weekly listening journals, students will improve their listening comprehension skills of the Englishes of their choice. |

Vocabulary notebook / Listening Journal outstanding. 18-20 A+ Near perfect attendance and very good participation. Vocabulary/Listening journal notebook shows a good level of work was done. 16-17 A Good attendance and fair participation. Vocabulary notebook/Listening Journal satisfactory. 14-15 B Unexcused absence and/or late, with fair participation. Vocabulary notebook/Listening Journal contains few words and unsatisfactory work. 12-13 C Unexcused absence more than three times. Lack of participation. Portfolio is unsatisfactory. No vocabulary notebook or listening journal . 0-11 F 20% Presentations If you do the following: Expect: Grade: Extremely high standard. All tasks have been completed correctly. Presentation followed the guidelines. A great deal of research was conducted from multiple sources. Creative work. Excellent Presentation Skills. Excellent Timing. Excellent use of visual aids. 18-20 A+ Good standard. Almost all of the tasks have been completed correctly. Presentation followed most of the guidelines and a satisfactory amount of research was conducted. Room for improvement. Good presentation skills. Good use of visual aids. 16-17 A Some tasks have not been completed in full or correctly or drafts may not have been improved on. Satisfactory research, although more sources could have been utilised. Average presentation skills. More preparation and practice may be needed. Average use of visual aids. 14-15 B Some tasks may not have been completed in full or correctly. The student has not researched the presentation adequately and made minimal effort to complete the tasks. Unsatisfactory preparation and practice. Unsatisfactory visual aids. 12-13 C Incomplete and unorganised. Unsatisfactory work. Lack of ideas. 0-11 F 30% Listening journal and reflection notes. *Please remember that you can choose any variety of English you want each week.* If you do the following: Expect: Grade: Extremely high standard and very well organised. Student has completed 10 minutes per week or more and has used a variety of resources. The student has followed the guidelines, all sections have been completed. Excellent reflection notes. Excellent range of sources. 27-30 A+ Good standard. Student has completed almost every week. Student has followed the guidelines. All sections have been completed. Good reflection notes. Good range of sources. 10 minutes per week. 24-26 A Student has completed almost every week. Student has followed the guidelines most weeks. Good reflection notes, although some are a little short. More sources could have been used. Less than ten minutes per week. 21-23 B Some weeks missing. Student has not always followed the guidelines. Minimal sources have been used. Unsatisfactory time lengths. 18-20 C Incomplete and unorganized. Unsatisfactory work. Lack of ideas. 0-17 F 10% Vocabulary Notebook If you do the following: Expect: Grade Extremely high standard. Student has completed the notebook every week. Student has followed the guidelines. 9-10 A+ Good standard. Student has completed the notebook almost every week. Student has followed the guidelines. All sections have been completed. 8 A Student has completed the notebook almost every week. Student has followed the guidelines most weeks. 7 B Notebook not completed every week, Some weeks are missing. Student has not always followed the guidelines. 6 C Incomplete and unorganised. Unsatisfactory work. 0-5 F Please also take note of the following: READING: Students in this class will read at least 800 to 1000 words per week (e.g. a short article), cumulatively (about 14000 words for the semester). WRITING: Students in this class will write at least 25 words per class in English and a 1000 presentation reflection that will cite a minimum of three sources (preferably a book, an article, and a web page). Please use the skills you learnt in Advanced Writing here. INTERACTING (speaking and listening) Students in this class will interact with each other in English. |
