Teacher: Nicola Galloway

This course is designed for students who want to work in the tourism industry in the future. It has a communicative focus and will center on various topics including airlines, hotels, sightseeing, the politics of tourism and working with English as an International Language. Each topic is looked at in depth to prepare students for a possible career in the tourism industry. Through the various topics and assignments your knowledge of both the tourism industry and English will increase.  

評価方法: Attendance/Participation 30% ( You decide your mark)
Coming to class, not being late, asking good questions in class. Extra points will also be awarded to those who keep a vocabulary notebook.

*If you have to miss a class for job hunting, it is your responsibility to come to my office and collect the worksheet. You must also complete this and come to the next class prepared. Students who come to class unprepared will not be able to participate in activities*

If you do the following: Expect: Grade:
Perfect attendance/excellent participation. Portfolio is complete and of a high standard. Vocabulary notebook shows a high level of participation. 27-30 A+
Near perfect attendance and very good participation. Portfolio is complete and of a satisfactory standard. Vocabulary notebook shows a good level of work was done. 24-26 A
Good attendance and fair participation. Portfolio is partly complete and of a satisfactory standard. Vocabulary notebook is satisfactory. 21-23 B
Unexcused absence and/or late with fair participation. Some assignments are missing from the portfolio and some work is unsatisfactory. Vocabulary notebook contains few words and unsatisfactory work. 18-20 C
Absent more than three times, lack of participation. Portfolio is unsatisfactory. No vocabulary notebook was submitted or it is unacceptable. 0-17 F

20% Presentations

If you do the following: Expect: Grade
Extremely high standard. All tasks have been completed correctly. Good use of vocabulary and minimal grammatical errors. Creative work. Excellent Presentation Skills. Excellent Timing. Excellent use of visual aids.   18-20 A+
Good standard. Almost all of the tasks have been completed correctly. Satisfactory use of vocabulary and minimal grammatical errors. Room for improvement.  Good presentation skills. Good use of visual aids. 16-17 A
Some tasks have not been completed in full or correctly or drafts may not have been improved on. Satisfactory use of relevant vocabulary but demonstrates no special knowledge. Some grammatical errors are present. Average presentation skills. More preparation  and practice may be needed. Average use of visual aids. 14-15 B
Some tasks  may not have been completed in full or correctly. The student has used only the simplest grammar and vocabulary and has made errors and little effort to complete the tasks. Unsatisfactory preparation and practice. Unsatisfactory visual aids. 12-13 C
Incomplete and unorganized.  Unsatisfactory work. Lack of ideas. 0-11 F

20% Letter writing (CV and cover letter portfolio)

*3 drafts of each must be submitted. 2 points will be deducted for each missing draft and if drafts show minimal signs of improvement.*

You will be awarded extra points for using the Peer Online Writing Centre and the Teacher-led Writing Centre. Don’t forget to get a teacher’s signature and/or a print out of the comment.

The portfolio is of an extremely high standard. All tasks have been completed correctly and the student shows evidence of hard work. The student has followed every step and shows good use of vocabulary and minimal grammatical errors. Creative ideas are expressed effectively and writing show signs of improvement. 18-20 A+
The portfolio is of a good standard and almost all of the tasks have been completed correctly. Satisfactory use of vocabulary and minimal grammatical errors. Good ideas but there is still room for improvement in the student’s writing. 16-17 A
Some tasks in portfolio have not been completed in full or correctly or drafts may not have been improved on. Satisfactory use of relevant vocabulary but demonstrates no special knowledge. Some grammatical errors are present, yet student has shown some improvement. 14-15 B
Some tasks in portfolio may not have been completed in full or correctly. Student has used only the simplest grammar and vocabulary and has made errors and little effort to complete the tasks. The tasks may have few ideas expressed in quite limited form. Student may not have improved on drafts and/or some drafts may be missing. 12-13 C
Incomplete and unorganised portfolio. Unsatisfactory work. Lack of ideas. Drafts are missing. 0-11 F

Extremely high standard. Student has completed every week. Student has followed the guidelines.
A+ 9-10
Good standard. Student has completed almost every week. Student has followed the guidelines. All sections have been completed.
A 8
Student has completed almost every week. Student has followed the guidelines most weeks.
B 7
Some weeks are missing. Student has not always followed the guidelines.
C 6
Incomplete and unorganized.  Unsatisfactory work. F 0-5

Please also take note of the following:

READING: Students in this class will read at least 800 to 1000 words per week (e.g. a short article), cumulatively (about 14000 words for the semester).
WRITING: Students in this class will write at least 25 words per class in English and a 1000 presentation reflection that will cite a minimum of three sources (preferably a book, an article, and a web page). Please use the skills you learnt in Advanced Writing here.  
INTERACTING (speaking and listening)
Students in this class will interact with each other in English.
