The goal of this course is to achieve some background and understanding on the state of the languages around the world. As you can see from the syllabus, we will be addressing several fundamental questions: Where are all the languages around the world? How did the languages get there? What sort of future can we expect for the world’s languages? To address these questions we must survey the languages of the world and examine their stories, including the evidence underlying these stories (i.e., an introduction to the scholarship that has produced the evidence from linguistics, archeology, genetics, and ecology). We will survey around 20 of the largest and better known language families around the world and, in particular, focus on the language history of Europe and South Asia, and the language history of Africa. |

| テキスト名： | I will provide each student, at no cost, with a set of my own lecture notes and other reading materials on the first day of class. These notes and reading materials will be required reading for the course. In addition, each student will have to purchase a packet of colored maps (Language Maps of The World) on the first day of class (\300). |
| 注意事項： | IMPORTANT NOTE: This is an introductory course and no background in linguistics (or ecology, or archeology, or geography, or genetics) is necessary to succeed. Everything will be properly introduced and explained. However, there is work to be done. Be prepared to memorize the names of language families, the names of individual languages, and to learn something about the individual characteristics and history of each language family. Be prepared to study world geography and learn the names and histories of countries and regions relevant to our survey. Be prepared to study and explore a few new ideas and perspectives on languages. |
