What makes us male or female? What kinds of roles do men and women have in society? How does the media affect how we see these roles? During this 14-week course, students will; - explore the core concepts of gender and sexuality in terms of their own understandings - explore how gender and sexuality relate to each other - critically explore these concepts from a range of different scientific and theoretical positions - critically analyse media representations of various gender and sexual identities utilising the above perspectives

１． Introduction - Students will explore what they understand to be the meanings of ‘gender’ and ‘sexuality’ and participate in discussions designed to challenge some of their preconceptions. ２． Gender - Students will study a number of theories on the nature of ‘gender’ through a series of readings and discussions. ３． Gender in the Media - As a class, students will discuss various representations of gender in the media. In groups, they will produce a presentation that analyses a media depiction of ‘gender’. ４． Sexuality - Students will study a number of theories on the nature of ‘sexuality’ through a series of readings and discussions. ５． Sexuality in the Media - As a class, students will discuss various representations of gender in the media. In groups, they will produce a presentation that analyses a media depiction of ‘sexuality’. ６． Final Project - Individually, students will deconstruct the representation of gender and/or sexuality in a film of their choice and give a presentation based on this.
