'Life Stories in Autobiography' is a course framed around the exploration of autobiographies across various cultures. The course will enable students to discover and examine life stories as seen through the authors' own eyes and as told in their own words with the use of published autobiographies. In reading and in exploring these stories, students will also be guided to discover their own voices, tell their own stories and write about their own lived experiences. The four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking will be accentuated throughout the course. The course will emphasize active, critical reading with a focus on not only what we read, but how we read. Learners will be encouraged to seek different meaning of what they read by being guided to ask different questions to attain fresh understanding and read in a new light. Voice will be important to this class. Students will practice and demonstrate their communicative and analytical skills through large and small group discussion, oral presentations, class leadership, as well as in the writing of personal experience. Students will write multiple drafts of their life stories and experiences, receive ongoing feedback from peers and teacher, and participate in evaluating their own and others' writings. Students will be introduced to excerpts of autobiographies around the world that explore certain themes, such as: Identity, Love, Leadership, Family, Travel, Community, War and trauma, Survival, Childhood... |
