This practically focused course aims to help improve and prepare students for the sociolinguistic demands of communicating in English for academic or international career purposes. These aims will be pursued through a focus on the development of critical discussion skills in which students will be expected to take part in small group activities focused on the structured exchange of personal opinion. In addition to this, the course will also focus on the development of academic presentation skills. This will include an analysis of presentation language, structure, and a look at presentation design in PowerPoint. Each week students will be able to use the practical skills acquired in class to present their ideas on a themed topic to their classmates.

It is hoped that by the end of the course students will be able to gain an understanding of some of the conventions of speaking in an academic context, express ideas confidently and respond to others spontaneously in small group discussions, use appropriate vocabulary and structure in communicating on subject-specific topics, plan and present a short oral presentation, speak to an audience without reading a from a text, prepare and use appropriate visual aids, and access support materials online and develop skills to support your on-going oral proficiency development. This practical course is especially recommended for those students who wish to increase their communication confidence and ability.
