With the effects of globalization and improvements in transportation and communication technology, there is more contact between people from different cultures than ever before. Thus, the study of intercultural communication (ICC) is becoming more important than it has ever been.
In this class we will be talking about what ICC means, some of the important factors to consider in analyzing ICC, and some of the problems that can arise when people from different cultures come into contact. We will look at four case studies (i.e. specific situations where ICC is important) to better understand some of the problems and to brainstorm ways to potentially avoid conflict. We will also look at the skill of interviewing in some detail, and you will have the opportunity to conduct an interview with a native English-speaker
