Discourse analysis considers language beyond the level of the phrase or sentence. Particularly it focuses on the context in which the language is used. In this class we will survey various approaches to discourse analysis study. Some of the topics we will look at are given below. The class will consist of lectures, readings (mainly from the textbook as well as other related readings), and discussions. The readings are in English, but the discussion will be in English or Japanese. The students will apply what they have learned about discourse to a final project.
