In this class we will explore different materials and methods for English language teaching. This class is open to English teachers or to those who are interested in second language learning/teaching. The class will be conducted entirely in English and participants are expected to actively discuss in class.




評価方法: Class participants who are taking this class for credit will be required to write a final paper. Other class participants will be given a pass/not pass grade, which is based on attendance and participation.

注意事項: Each week the class will be divided into two sections. The first hour is discussion on any topic the class members wish. The second hour involves a group discussion of the topics in the textbook. Class members are encouraged to bring in examples of their own teaching materials to share.

2. Week2 The teaching process―presenting new information to students and giving explanations and instructions
3. Week3 Practice activities―the functions of practice, the characteristics of good practice activities, and sequence and progression in practice
4. Week4 Tests―different types of language tests, designing a test
5. Week5 Teaching pronunciation and spelling―whatdoes pronunciation involve?
6. Week6 Teaching vocabulary―presenting new vocabulary, helping students remember vocabulary, and testing vocabulary
7. Week7 Teaching grammar―What is grammar? What is the role of grammar in reading? Grammar practice activities and dealing with grammatical mistakes
8. Week8 Topics, situations, notions and functions―What are they? Teaching chunks of language from text to task, from task to text.
9. Week9 Teaching listening―real life listening, learner problems, adapting activities
10. Week 10 Teaching Speaking―oral fluency practice, functions of topicand talk, discussion activities
11. Week 11 Teaching reading―how do we read? Beginning reading, types of reading activities, improved reading skills
12. Week 12 Teaching writing―written vs. spoken text, teaching procedures
13. Week 13 Review and discussion of previous weeks
