Lecture on American Literature II:
African American Literature

 In this course, we will explore the long suppressed experience of African-Americans, as it has been expressed in important works of modern literature. We will learn how leading African-American writers have dealt with such painful issues as racial inequality and discrimination, ethnic identity, and individuality, psychological and social struggles for self-esteem and status. Special focus will be on the issues of "passing" and African American people's internalized belief of white supremacy. We will learn something about major modern authors such as Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Gloria Nayler, Zola Neale Hurston,Nella Larsen,Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker will be featured. Critical theories and interdisciplinary perspectives will be usefu. Lectures will be in English and Japanese.
