This course is a survey of literature of the United States from the 17th Century Colonial Period through the 19th century. In the context of cultural history,we will explore psychological, sociological, political, religious, moral, aesthetic, and philosophical issues expressed in the literature.We will pay serious attention to what makes America “American.” Students will learn about Puritanism and other forms of Christianity, Rationalism, Transcendentalism, Realism and other key concepts related to American life and values. Students are expected to think critically about the historical background of famous literary works, especially of passages from some of them. The readings, as well as videos of relevant novels and plays that are known throughout the world,will illustrate relationships between literature, ideas, and ways of living.

評価方法: Class Participation 20%,  Book Report 20%, Mid-Semester Exam 30%, Final Exam 30%
