This course is designed to help you gain the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to communicate well interculturally.  In this course, you will learn some theory along with the necessary skills to better succeed in communicating internationally.  We will be using a variety of teaching methods including class discussion, group activities, exercises, creative projects, collaborations, fieldwork and more.  If you are willing to put forth the effort, to challenge yourself and confront stereotypes and to participate fully and respectfully, this course will help you:

1. To examine your own intercultural awareness, your ‘other’ awareness, and the dynamics that arise in interactions between and among people from different cultures.
2. To understand how and why communication processes differ among cultures and to acquire the knowledge and skills to enhance intercultural communication competence.
3. To identify barriers including racism, sexism and systems of privilege that arise from histories of colonization, exploitation and discrimination and learn ways to creatively address these inequities.
4. To gain a critical perspective on both local and global issues by examining the historical and political dimensions of intercultural relations.
