This course will explore musical movements that occurred between 1980 and 1994 and their relationship to culture and society at that time. The focus of the course is on artists who emerged from punk to create music that transcended the bounds of the punk genre and whose influence is still relevant today. Each week we will look at a key period of a particular artist’s development and discuss how their work is connected to the broader social and cultural context. Music, video, books, articles and visual images will be used in class as the basis of lectures and discussion. The objectives of the course are that students will gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and social elements of the music scene during the 1980s and early 1990s and be able to place the themes discussed in class within a broader context. |
