While the primary aim of this course is the acquisition of English itself, it is also to  increase awareness of other Englishes around the world and is designed for students who want to work using English as a lingua franca, improve their general English proficiency skills and become more culturally aware. It will have a communicative focus and will centre on various Englishes that students may encounter upon graduating from Kanda. The course will introduce students to the history of English, raise awareness and understanding of different Englishes, and prepare students for a career using English.

There are now more second language users of English than native speakers, and there is thus a need for exposure to different varieties of English around the world.  It is hoped that this course will have an impact on students’ worldviews and their self-confidence on speaking English as an International Language.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of the history of the English language and different forms of English around the world  along with a range of possible explanations for particular linguistic developments.  Students will have extended their learning to a deeper understanding of the English language. They will also have the opportunity to demonstrate this knowledge in written and spoken form, and they will be able to contribute their ideas in class discussions.
