This course begins by looking at the phenomenon of globalization from a historical perspective. It looks at the beginnings of economic globalization through trade and the further development of globalization in the 19th and 20th centuries through increasing industrialization and development in transportation and communication technology. Once the concept of globalization has been firmly established, the course will move on to examine what impact globalization has on society and the geographical and regional differences in its economic and social effects. Finally, the course will focus for the remainder of the semester on the effects of globalization on culture. Specifically, it will examine what is happening to local cultures including Japanese culture. We will also look at whether a ‘global culture’ is developing and what its sources are. A number of perspectives on globalization will be surveyed ranging from positive to pessimistic. At the end of the course, students will be asked to carry out a research project on some aspect of the theme of globalization and culture and present their research in class.

The textbook is somewhat difficult and therefore readings will be discussed in class.

This topic is quite broad and complex. The readings are often difficult and so reading in advance and attendance in class is very important. Failure to attend regularly will result in an incomplete understanding of the material and so a strict attendance policy will be enforced (to be discussed in the first class).
