Barack Obama has become the forty-fourth president of the United States. In his inaugural speech, President Obama called on the American people to “recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism... with sturdy alliances and convictions.” It is useful as well as meaningful to get ourselves familialized with writings that have inspired or roused America in the time of troubles. In the second semester, we will read the writings of such people as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Bernard Baruch, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Theodore H. White. We will discuss ideals and values that are discerned in the works both in class discussion and in essays. Students’ ability in reading and writing will be enhanced, along with understanding of the Americans’ national consciousness.
