Fairy tales and folk tales have generally come out of oral traditions, and oral storytelling today remains a popular pastime. We will enjoy telling, listening to, reading, and writing both original and traditional stories. Students will study Western and Eastern storytelling traditions by reading classic tales such as Grimms’ Fairy Tales, Arabian Nights, Aesop’s fables, and Chinese and Japanese folk tales. In addition, students will write their own fictional and non-fictional stories, and share them with classmates both orally and in written form. This course has two primary goals. First, students will study well-known classic tales from world traditions. Second, they will learn from these stories by writing their own stories, and in turn understand storytelling through personal exploration. About half of the semester will be spent improving oral storytelling skills, which will help students become more confident presenters and public speakers. In addition, students will be urged to consider deeper questions. For example, how do these stories make up national, cultural, and individual identities? How can someone from one place and time relate to the differing views of someone from another place or time? How do stories differ when transmitted orally instead of textually? How do stories change as they are reread and rewritten in new generations and contexts? What are the effects of communal authorship? How are stories used for moral education? What was the early form of popular stories such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, or Urashima Taro? Stories only continue to survive by being retold and rewritten in each successive generation. Therefore, students will be expected to engage these stories personally, within the context of the communities they live in. During the oral storytelling part of the class, assignments will focus on preparing stories for oral presentation. As the focus shifts to written storytelling, there will be more reading and writing homework. Since the goal of the class is to share stories and ideas, attendance and homework is expected. |
