This course will be an introduction to the works of major 19th century Russian writers (Pushkin, Lermontov, Nekrasov, Gogol, Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and others as time permits), including a discussion of how Russian literature is translated into other media (such as film, music and art). All readings are in ENGLISH. The purpose of the course is twofold: to give students a basic introduction to the Golden Era of Russian literature and to develop in them an appreciation of good literature. Studying a specific body of literature will give the students new perspectives on general human questions and will make them more informed readers of literature in general, since Russian literature shares many features with other literatures. To meet these goals we will analyze an array of Russian literature from the 19th century. We will read not only prose, but poetry and drama as well. The course will be a mixture of very short lectures, lots of reading assignments, reading journals, class discussions, and short response papers. The most important aspect of the course will be the students’ reading of and thinking about the texts themselves and their classroom discussions. The short lectures and assigned readings will provide some very basic historical, social, ideological, and intellectual background information to help the students see the works in the relevant cultural context and to give them a deeper understanding of the issues raised in the texts. The oral aspects of the course (class discussions) are aimed at improving the students’ articulation of ideas and opinions. Students will be formulating their own points clearly so that others will understand and respond, backing up their points in a convincing way, asking relevant questions, finding out how others react to the readings and their ideas, and so on. The reading journals will be assigned after each class and will provide the students with an opportunity for reflection and formulation of their own discussion questions and further research into topics of interest. The short response papers will reflect the students’ thoughts and feelings on the assigned readings and authors and any topics of particular interest to the students based on their reading and class discussions. There will be no research component to the response papers. The students will be required to submit 4 short response papers out of a choice of 8. |
