CAUTION: The following course contents were the one for the year 2006.  Overall course framework will be the same in 2008.  However the contents, especially debate topics, may be changed.  The details will be announced in the first class session of the semester.

Goals
1. To develop oral proficiency in English to carry out argumentation.
2. To develop critical thinking skills and attitude toward society.
3. To develop the skill to make public speaking in front of audience and the will to communicate positively.

Roles of debate activity are various; it is utilized in various social settings that require resolution of problems (e.g. legal courts, the National Diet).  Debate is held for political campaign or consciousness raising (Presidential debate, public debate or symposium on various social problems held by universities or local governments).  Debate has been considered as an education tool to improve communications skills in general.
Debate also raises human beings to be a critical thinker.  Throughout this activity, students are exposed to the scene of the world via researching and required to analyze it as objectively as possible.  This activity will provide students with a good chance to improve ability to discuss various social topics.  I believe that Kanda students/graduates are expected to be able to carry out such an academic discussion.  For this reason, this class deals with a topic of the Yasukuni Shrine disputes.  This is not only a domestic issue but also an international one with regard to the relation between Japan and other East Asian countries, especially China.  Therefore the debate on this topic will be a good chance for us to learn and think about it.  I expect all students in this class to have high awareness on this issue and to be knowledgeable on it.

Activities
1. Lecture on debate.
Minimum amount of lecture of debate theory and practice will be provided for those who do not have any previous experience of debating.
2. Group presentation of the issues related to Yasukuni Shrine
