A semester-long course which can provide a good grounding in international legal English applicable to the international business environment or other working context where legal English is required. In addition, it can also act as a preparatory course for those interested in sitting the ILEC (International Legal English Certificate) and gaining specialised certification in English.

The course will employ content-based instruction using a series of practical individual/pair/group tasks designed to increase legal linguistic understanding across all of the four skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Emphasis will also be on enhancing critical thinking capability within specialist contexts for students applicable to international law and business.

Specifically, this course is for students wishing to undertake future work within an international business/legal environment and where they would be required to understand specialised English in relation to:

-managing/working with international contracts

-working within a trading company- i.e. importation/exportation of goods,sale of goods

-working with real estate

-working within Corporate sales depts.

-required to understand the various structures of corporations and business associations as part of their work

-working within any government/corporate/business environment where they would be exposed to legal documents, procedures and processes etc.

This course aims to help students to build a professional portfolio which can be taken to job interviews to demonstrate knowledge, ability and achievement within this specialised area of Legal English. In so doing, it is expected that students will have a competitive advantage in applying for specific employment opportunities where English is also required.

-Individual reports (500 words including self-evaluation)
-Performance indicator check sheet (counts towards participation grade)
-Graded online vocational research tasks (specific to students' individual professional interests)
-ILEC (International Legal English Certificate) Practice tests (optional extra credit)

  The instructor will provide all reference materials and handouts for the course. No textbook is required to be bought by the student.

注意事項: This course will be highly student-centered and students will be expected to choose the Unit topics to be taught and bring their own preferred materials according to their specific areas of interest. They may be required to carry out some professional research directly applicable to their future intended career. Materials will be brought to class or submitted to the instructor for materials development.Accordingly, this course aims to help students to build a professional portfolio which they can take to job interviews to demonstrate their ability and achievement in the specialized area of International Legal English.
