The course will begin with an investigation into the history of the city and state, starting with pre-European residents of the area, moving on to colonial and revolutionary eras and will then jump quickly to modern times. Themes that might be explored: the foundation and development of Harvard and MIT; Sports obsession - Celtics, Bruins, Red Sox, Patriots, Minutemen; history of brewing; Boston as setting for film, television and literature, etc. The purpose of this course is to teach students about the rich history, cultural heritage, literature, lifestyle, architecture, sports, and imagery of the capital city of Massachusetts, as well as other areas within the "Bay State". To give students the opportunity for independent research into specific aspects of the culture of New England, and to communicate with real people in Massachusetts, through blogs and internet bulletin boards. |

テキスト名: | The course will have no required text, but will use excerpts of literature from notable local authors, both from what might be termed the higher literary echelons, such as Emily Dickinson, Louisa May Alcott, John Greenleaf Whitier, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorn, Edgar Allan Poe, etc., and to popular modern writers such as Robert B. Parker (Spenser, detective series), and Theodor Seuss Geisel / a.k.a. Dr. Seus (Children’s author, Cat in the Hat, Horton Hears a Who!) In recent years Boston has become increasingly popular as a location for film and television (for example TV shows such as Boston Public, Boston Legal, The Practice, Ally McBeal, Spenser for Hire, The Real World: Boston, etc. and movies such as Good Will Hunting, Fever Pitch, Celtic Pride, Mystic River, the Departed, etc.). Some of the sources listed above will be used as study materials. Students will take an active part in the choosing process. |
