What makes you happy and healthy? How can you have more pleasure in life and make it last longer? What are the qualities of good times? How can you help others have happy lives? Time Magazine called the new field of Positive Psychology “The Science of Happiness” (February 28, 2005). This class will experiment practically with this science and discuss how we might apply the information to our daily lives. At the same time, we want to help improve the world in general. A major part of the course is how we can improve our own communications with ourselves (self-talk) and others. The quality of our communications, to a great extent, makes the quality of our lives. The ACTIVE element of the course should be taken seriously. The joy and playfulness is also serious. Students will be asked to conduct regular experiments, work in small groups, perhaps video record our conversations, and use the materials outside of the classroom as well as inside the classroom. The first few weeks will give you a taste of the possible. Then you will be able to request continuing certain activities and adding others. Active participation and regular communication with your classmates and teacher make up the major requirements for the course. (Please review the new attendance policy and note that your grade generally goes down one letter for every missed class. Please come and enjoy.) Texts and materials to be announced. Some of the topics we may cover are: 1. Altruism (helping others) 2. Appreciative Inquiry (asking what is working well rather than what is not working) 3.
