This course is designed to help you (1) improve your academic English skills, mainly listening and speaking skills, in a variety of situations; and (2) develop a deeper understanding of human behavior. Students will practice crucial academic language skills such as summarizing what they have heard, listening for implied meaning, comparing information from different sources, and using examples to illustrate a general point. Discussions will be held on a variety of academic topics related to psychology and communications. Tasks and assignments include working in pairs/groups (e.g., telling stories, making group decisions, role-playing), giving oral presentations, keeping learning logs, as well as listening to authentic interviews and formal classroom lectures.

評価方法: You will be evaluated on class attendance and participation, tests, oral presentations, and portfolios (i.e., collection of work that demonstrates your learning). More details about these course requirements will be given at the first class meeting and negotiated thereafter as needed.

テキスト名: M. Espeseth, Academic listening encounters: Human behavior, Cambridge University Press, 2004

注意事項: The course requires active participation and cooperation. Students are expected to cooperate with others in their group work.
