In this course we will examine the nature of humor with special emphasis on the use of parody and satire.

Humor is an aspect of human communication that is often said to get lost in translation.  It can take the form of gentle and respectful camp or biting social and political commentary, but if one lacks the specific background knowledge that creates a funny situation, it is difficult to "get the joke."

This course will bring students through a fun and educational journey where we explore, “What lies behind the laughs.”  Movies, TV programs, books, articles, and stories will be examined.  Humor as vehicle for social criticism, and censorship will also be addressed.

The below list of lecture topics is tentative and liable to change.
