The goal of this course is to examine the life history of human language, from origins to extinction. In so doing, we will evaluate proposals for the evolutionary and historical development of language and examine the relationships between languages, their speakers, culture, and the environment. We will cover a wide range of topics including issues underlying linguistic diversity and language extinction, the ecology of language, the language situation in several countries, and language rights and language planning. Each class period will feature a short lecture followed by activities which will give students the opportunity to apply the concepts and vocabulary introduced in the lecture. The last class meeting will be devoted to student presentations.
