This class is designed to benefit people wanting to-- - Work in an international company - Study abroad - Travel abroad - Interact with foreigners in Japan - Learn more about their own culture - Communicate more effectively with others This course will introduce concepts, strategies, and practices for improving communication in a constantly globalizing world. Students will first consider their own backgrounds and identities, and then reflect on how those backgrounds shape their personal values and customs. Whether between individuals of different countries or not, a potential for misunderstanding exists whenever people communicate. We will think about how value differences affect communication styles, and how we can communicate effectively despite these differences. Whether they have been abroad or not, most people have noticed communication gaps between men and women, for example. Based on these communication experiences, we will identify skills useful to intercultural understanding. We will then look specifically at misunderstandings that may occur in intercultural situations. Using a balance of personal experiences, classroom activities, case studies (“critical incidents”) and theory, we will develop our overall intercultural sensitivity. The skills learned in this class, therefore, will be useful no matter what culture one interacts with. Finally, we will analyze more deeply why people from different cultures act and think differently, and why culture clashes occur. Even students who have a good amount of experience living or traveling abroad will find this course useful to be able to explain, for example, why Japanese act this way, or why Americans act that way. Although many of the examples will compare Eastern and Western cultures, the models used in class are not country-specific. Students will be expected to attend all classes and actively participate in group activities and presentations. In addition to assigned readings, much of the class discussion will be based on students’ own personal experiences. Therefore, students should expect to reflect on and discuss their own personal identities, experiences, and understandings of other cultures. |
