This is a discussion-intensive course, exploring the historical background of Islam in Southeast Asia, the effects of colonization, and the major issues within the context of Western and Islamic thoughts. The main theme will be combined with discussions on the relevant topics in current affairs such as the domestic and regional Islamic movements, cultural collisions in the modern plural societies, secular nationalism, socialism, and the problems of democratization after decolonization. Students who want to participate in the class discussions (most preferably in English) are particularly welcome.
