Lecture on American Literature II:
African-American Literature

 In this course, we will explore the long suppressed experience ofAfrican-Americans, as it has been expressed in important works of modern literature. We will learn how leading African-American writers have dealt with such painful issues as racial inequality and discrimination, ethnic identity, and individuality, psychological and social struggles for self-esteem and status.Black Nationalism and other political and cultural movements against oppression and poverty, and poisonous interactions of racism and sexism.
  20th century authors such as Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, William M. Kelley, Ernest J. Gaines, Gloria Nayler, John A. Williams, Zola Neale Hurston, Jamaica Kincaid, Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker will be featured. A few relevent films will be shown and discussed. Critical theories and interdisciplinary perspectives will be usefu. Lectures will be in English and Japanese.
