There are two objectives in this course. 1) to further brush up the skill to debate in English 2) to brush up analytical skill to understand how arguments function in our society and what contribution argumentation makes to the society. Argumentation takes place anywhere anytime in our society. From interpersonal dispute to more formal debate in a law court, our practice of argumentation sometimes makes great contributions to welfare of our society. However argumentation sometimes brings us unwanted sadness. Arguments made by politicians may fool us. Arguments between friends may terminate the relation. In this class we spend portion of class sessions to analyze our society from a viewpoint of argumentation. By critically analyzing arguments in our society, we will deepen our understanding of the society and nurture our ability to better cope with argumentative setting. For the reasons up above, we will regard our debate practice as a method to improve our skill to analyze arguments. By means of this skill, we will actually analyze argumentation in our society. |

Students will be graded based on the following criteria. 1. Attendance and Serious Participation to Class Activities 2. Group presentation 3. Debate practice 4. Evaluation report of debate rounds 5. Final paper |

The number of students will be adjusted by short essay exam in case that many students wish to take this class. Therefore, those who would like to take this class must attend the very first class session of the semester. This class requires students to have C level English proficiency. Please bring a photo copy of the proof of your proficiency (Grade Report of Step Test, Score Sheet of TOEIC, TOEFL, KEPT, etc.) when you attend the first class session. 上記の内容は2005年度に開講された英語ディベートIIの内容であり、若干の変更の可能性がある。変更点やディベートのトピックなどは初回の授業の際に説明する。 |
