This class is an introduction to Christianity and its influence on art and culture. From the rapper Kanye West to the Dutch painter Rembrandt, the rock band U2, the books Lord of the Rings and Shiokari Pass (塩狩峠)、the movies Matrix and Sister Act, and even the cartoon character Snoopy, Christianity’s influence on the Western culture and sometimes Eastern culture is both wide and deep. This course will take a close look at Christian thought and its expression in art, cinema, music, and literature. Learning in this class will take place through mini-lectures, discussion, projects, presentations, reading assignments, and sometimes guest speakers.
