The language varieties we choose to use are part of our identity and how we show ourselves to the world.  It is sometimes said that language is neutral and all languages are equal.  However, depending on how we use language and what language we use, our expressions can be a form of power. Power can be expressed in language in relation to our age, race, gender, nationality, and social class.  In this course, we will look at how language and power are linked; at how people use language to express their power.
