Topic/Theme: In this class we will explore themes in American Pop Culture such as: movies, TV shows, music, art, literature, fashion, current events and politics. We will also analyze the implications of their transference into global pop culture. We will begin by looking at the history of pop culture and the emergence of trends. Some questions that will be explored are: Who affects pop culture? Why do they affect pop culture? How does culture become “pop”? Purpose: Students will use and refine their analytical skills by exploring major themes in pop culture as well as vocalizing their opinions in class. Materials: The teacher will provide all materials (videos, articles, music, etc.) for this class. Main Activities: Students will be asked to analyze current and past trends in pop culture. This will require frequent class discussions as well as completing projects on their own and in small groups. Grade: Attendance and Participation 20% Speaking Journals 30% Visual Representation 5% Critical Review 10% Debate 10% Research Paper 10% Group Presentation 15% |
