IMPORTANT NOTE:  The order and contents of the classes may change from those listed.  The classes listed are intended to give you a flavour of what the course is about.

Through a series of exciting challenges students will be exposed to and practice key Language skills such as: -

1)  Interaction Management (turn-taking)
2)  Coping Strategies (paraphrasing, adjustment, word coinage)
3)  Negotiation of Meaning
4)  Conversational Listening
5)  Negotiative Functions (clarification, disagreement, interruptions)
6)  Collaborative/teamwork skills (leadership, role assignments, working to deadlines, compromise, self assessment)
7)  Use Oral Presentation Language to peer audiences

In this course students will be exposed to and practice key Academic/Work skills such as: -

1)  Critical Thinking
2)  Deductive/Reasoning
3)  Extrapolation and Inference
4)  Problem Solving of Genuine ‘real world’ tasks
5)  Research Methods
6)  Finding and recording information from print and non-print sources for evidence to support opinions and inferences.

1. Great Paper Airplane Challenge: Preparation Phase

Tally Ho!  Your team must design and build a paper plane which can fly for the longest time.  A competition will then be held to see whose plane is king of the skies and who's crashed and burned!  To the winners - bragging rights! To the losers - extra homework!

4. Comic Strip: Preparation Phase

Teams will script and act in short photo comic strip complete with story arc, captions and speech bubbles.  Finished comics are then read and rated by other class members!

7. A Bridge too Far: Prep Phase

This next construction challenge is based firmly on the ground! hopefully.  Your team must battle against time to design and build a bridge capable of carrying a tank over a deep and wide river.  This time you will be able to trade a set limit of materials between teams, so good communication skills and charisma are of paramount importance!

10. Cartel: Preparation Phase

Breakfast is for wimps. In the world of business it is all about money, money, money.  So grab your briefcase and mobile phone and put on your red braces, you have just become the CEO of your first company!

Does your cartel have what it takes to make the most money?  This business simulation will test your team's communication, negotiation and business acumen to the limit.

Lights! Camera! Action!  Do you fancy yourself as a bit of an Audrey Hepburn or Brad Pitt?  In this challenge competing teams will produce film trailers.  The class will then watch the finished trailers and vote on the best one.  Whether you prefer to make silly or serious trailers, the results will be funny to see!

17. Mars Landing: Preparation Phase

This final construction challenge sees us looking back to the skies.  Teams must design and build a novel "lander" which will stop an egg breaking on impact when dropped from a height.

James Bond 007? Who? License to...what?  You are going to spy school!  In this series of classes you must compete as individuals and teams to solve devious puzzles and tricky 'spy' assignments on Her Majesty's Secret Service!

In this series of classes you will reflect on the work you have done during the semester, your contributions, weak points and strengths from a language and communication viewpoint.  You will comment on what you did/did not enjoy during the course and analyze why.  You will conclude with the lessons you have learnt from the course.
