Various aspects of the culture and history of African countries in the late 20th and early 21st centuries will be introduced.  Themes include education, art, music, HIV/AIDS, and tourism.  These will be used to highlight differences and similarities between various African countries, and thus provide insight into this complex continent.

評価方法：

Assessment will be based on: Attendance: 30% Class participation, in-class tasks, and take-home assignments: 30% Portfolio: 40%

１． Part 1 - What is Africa? Topics include: The idea of Africa and geographic, economic, and climatic differences. ２． Part 2 - The arrival of European traders and settlers Topics include: The slave trade, the scramble for Africa, and colonial Africa. ３． Part 3 - Decolonisation of Africa Topics include: Independence movements, the birth of new nations, and the effects on colonialism on Africa today. ４． Part 4 - African art Topics include: Traditional and modern examples of art in Africa, African music, and post-colonial literature. ５． Part 5 - Issues in Africa today Topics include: The roles of women, education, HIV/AIDS, and tourism.
