This course aims to introduce participants to Hawaiian people and culture.  Hawaii has been one of the most popular places for Japanese travelers; yet, many of its historical, cultural, and political realms are unknown to the visitors.  Together with the participants, the instructor will draw upon the dynamic aspects of the Hawaiian culture that have formed the contemporary cultural and societal trends in Hawaii.  In addition, special attention will be given to the lives of the Japanese-Americans in Hawaii from their early arrival to the Island until the present.  The instructor will provide the participants with reading materials for discussions as well as electronic (media) materials.  Rather than textual interactions in the class, the instructor and his participants will seek to develop activities, tasks, and projects, so that the course can be dynamically facilitated.  Class participants will be expected to choose and explore their own topic(s) and search for the relevant materials about Hawaiian culture, and share them with the class in the form of a class project which will constitute a major portion of the course credit.  Active participation in all aspects of class activities is a must for this class, as the primary purpose of the class centers on the development of the participants’ English skills through the course content.

This course will provide the participants with a unique opportunity to identify the dynamic aspects of historical as well as contemporary Hawaiian culture and society through English and also to promote an understanding of their own Japanese selves by exploring a different culture(s) in a contrastive manner.
