This is an introductory course on topics in Intercultural Communication. Students will study concepts, strategies, and practices for improving communication in a constantly globalizing world. Students will refine their abilities to evaluate, understand, and interact with people from other cultures through various case studies using readings, film, student experiences, and classroom activities.
Students will be expected to attend all classes and actively participate in group activities and presentations. In addition to assigned readings, much of the class discussion will be based on students’ own personal experiences. Therefore, students should expect to reflect on and discuss their own personal identities, experiences, and understandings of other cultures. The emphasis of the class is developing strategies for improving communication, not in learning about any culture in particular.
