Media English and Oral Communication (a) The course is primarily geared to developing students’ ability to understand English newspapers and TV news programs and improving their reading, listening and speaking skills. In this comprehensive course, taught by the same teacher, students will be given ample opportunity to discuss and prepare presentations on issues depicted in news stories. These activities will enhance the students’ overall language skills, including writing, and expand their vocabulary and knowledge about journalistic English and current affairs. In this comprehensive course, taught by the same teacher, students will be given ample opportunity to discuss and make presentations on current news topics. These activities will enhance the students’ overall language skills, including writing, and expand their vocabulary and knowledge about journalistic English and current affairs. Intensive Reading & Extensive Reading (a) (b) The purpose of this course is two-fold. First, it aims to help students develop a detailed understanding of academic texts (e.g., intercultural communication) with the help of various reading strategies and skills. Students are encouraged to go beyond a basic comprehension of the material to a more complete understanding of and critical reflection on the subject matter. Second, the course intends to develop students’ reading fluency in English and to increase their confidence about reading in English. Students will read a large quantity of English texts including graded readers, short stories, and novels. While the emphasis of this course is reading and thinking skills, a secondary goal is the development of advanced vocabulary. Advanced Writing & Communicative Grammar (a) The aim of the course is to develop the students' critical writing skills. Students will be introduced to a variety of organizational patterns, selected grammatical structures, reference skills, and the steps in the writing process. They will develop strategies for organizing their ideas and planning their writing. They will learn and practice the processes for researching and writing successful academic papers. Advanced Writing & Communicative Grammar (b) The course focuses on the processes for research and writing academic papers. Using a number of organizational patterns and related grammatical structures, students will practice different kinds of academic writing assignments so that they become more aware of various approaches to research and academic writing. Through their writing, students will have to evaluate other people’s writing as well as their own. This will enable the students to develop their analytical skills. |
評価方法: | In all the Sogo classes, attendance is absolutely required. Students who are absent will fail the course. In addition to attendance, evaluation is based on class particiation, tests, reports, homework, and presentations. |
