In this class we will read, analyze, and criticize literary works and explore films from various countries, focusing on problems of love, marriage, and the family in relation to economic, social, and political conditions. The works are: Emily Bronte's WUTHERING HEIGHTS, Henrik Ibsen's A DOLL'S HOUSE, William Faulkner's THE SOUND AND THE FURY, Yoshimoto Banana's THE KITCHEN, and Kojijma Nobuo's HOYO-KAZOKU. In these outstanding works, characters face conflicts between romantic love and financial practicality, idealism and realism, privacy and the public life, passion and rationality. We will explore the artistic ways in which these themes are revealed through characterizations, plots, styles, and literary techniques. Some cross-cultural comparisons will be made concerning customs, moral judgments, psychological insights, and ideas. In addition, such films as ORDINARY PEOPLE and ONE TRUE THING will be shown to illustrate serious conflicts among family members.
